THERE’S NO USE in a writer denying the pleasures derived of notoriety, but it happened this week that I was “Freshly Pressed” and that I had feelings about it which weren’t entirely comforting. In case you don’t know, to be Freshly Pressed (or FPd, as I have discovered the WordPress folks put it) is to have a post chosen by the editors of WordPress for the landing page at wordpress.com. This arbitrary distinction — as I feel it to be — brings with it a huge momentary increase in traffic, comments, email and polite approbation. In short, here comes and goes your fifteen minutes of fame.

I’ve since discovered a new genre of writings, the Freshly Pressed Reflection. Near everyone who has written on the subject notes the disturbing feeling of being suddenly exposed, which is odd given the public character of posting your thoughts on the Internet. Someone who has, say, ten readers a day, the bulk of whom are friends and family, for a day or two attracts 1,500 readers. That’s a touch unnerving, but we all write for an audience, don’t we. Best to accept from the beginning that putting your words into the public square is an act of ego as well as of self-exposure, and take with as much grace as you can manage the logical outcomes of this decision.

But what I find especially discomforting is the kindness of strangers. Quite a few people have chosen to follow this website of mine in the past day, and to contribute their good graces, and I can’t help but think that I am going to disappoint. It’s not as if I’ve taken money or entered into a contract, but I’ve always felt I had an unspoken compact with my readers, and that if written out it would look something like the following: don’t pander, and don’t waste people’s precious time — always be candid, regardless of the possible consequences, and always put your best work forward. From this it follows that I’m going to piss at least some of my readers off. I’m fine with that. It’s the prospect of boring them or otherwise wasting their time that gets to me. A larger audience means that you’re taking more time from more people, and as quaint as it may sound I feel the moral weight of presuming in this way.

The piece chosen for prominence by WordPress was called “The Courage of Malala Yousafzai and the Lessons of Mingora.” In my estimation it’s far from being my best work, or even among my best. I wrote it for publication at the National Post, and even before it was Freshly Pressed it had become the most read piece of this site. I was gratified by this because I believe the rights and dignity of women and girls will remain objects of abuse until those of us who are fed up stand together in opposition. My colleague at the National Post, Barb Kay (who wrote a piece on the shooting I consider better than mine), and I allowed ourselves to hope that this horrible shooting might be the event which at last turns the world against those forces which prefer to keep women and girls uneducated, submissive, frightened and impoverished. It was thus especially gratifying to attract a worldwide audience, including many readers from Pakistan, who without exception stand in solidarity with Malala Yousafzai.

As I always do when I write about the various Taliban groups, I got emails from people saying I didn’t know what I was talking about … I am brainwashed by the media … etc. Usually what follows is a tirade against American imperialism, the suggestion being that there is only one source of evil in the world (USA) and that it is useless and even immoral to discuss any other topic or to assign guilt to any other party. I am honoured to count these people, who as a rule call themselves “progressives,” as my political enemies. I’m not very nice to this kind of person, and indeed I’m downright rude. If you have chosen to follow my work on this site, or you are considering it, I may as well tell you now that this is so. I don’t feel good about it, but I’m not interested in changing, either. My manners being what they are, I expected never to be Freshly Pressed. I’m polite with polite people, but the bastards can go to hell. The WordPress editors probably try to circumnavigate this sort of attitude, and I suspect I may have passed through a security breach of a sort.

Well, there it is, my FP piece. This personal style is not my usual way, but I did want to acknowledge the many kind people who offered their goodwill, especially as it was directed at Malala Yousafzai. The like-minded have to stand together in solidarity, or nothing will ever change for the better. To my friends and comrades, all my best wishes for a better world. Keep up the good fight!
